Caitlyn's story Caitlyn will be a sophomore in high school this year. The Carondelet Family YMCA has been an integral part of her life and she is eager to tell others how much the YMCA has changed her life. With the help of financial assistance, she attended Central Leader’s School. This one-week YMCA program teaches youth and teens leadership skills for life. Caitlyn helped to found the Carondelet YMCA Leader’s Club and has served as President. Caitlyn has far exceeded the volunteer service expectation by teaching preschool dance and assisting in Child Watch, our on-site, while-you-work-out, baby-sitting service. She also spent an entire summer as a Counselor in Training for YMCA Day Camp. Caitlyn has planned and led other teens in service- learning and civic engagement projects, including helping to design the South City Skate Park. Not only has she given to the YMCA, the YMCA continues to give back to her. She has made service-learning trips to Trinidad and Belize over the past two years.

The Washington University Campus Y was chartered on campus in 1912. It was interrupted by WWI and reorganized in 1924. The Campus Y has been an active student organization on campus ever since, offering a wide variety of programs to meet the needs of the students, Washington University and the greater St. Louis community.

The Washington University Campus Y is a Student Leadership Development Center. We are not a fitness facility.

Our office hours are Monday to Friday from 9:00 am until 5:00 pm.

Kelly's Story

"VERDE (Volunteers for Environment, Restoration, Development & Education) has been such a large part of my college life. It not only impacts the lives of the kids we teach, but also the teachers and schools as well. We keep receiving positive e-mails throughout the semester from teachers at the schools we visit. Several of these e-mails are requests from other teachers who want us to come to their class. We have the pleasure of teaching kids at local elementary schools about environmental issues and fostering their awarenes of taking care of our planet. I have no doubt we are changing the world, one child at a time!"

A time of fun, fellowship, good food, and great memories... that is what we enjoyed at the Washington University Campus Y Alumni Event on June 1, 2006. Alumni and friends were welcomed back to the Campus Y and Washington University for an historical tour and walk through campus. Our tour guide was our very own Jim Burmeister, Campus Y Board Member and Washington University's Executive Director of University Relations. We even got to go to the roof of Brookings and look at all of the changes in St. Louis and on campus.

For the second year, the Campus Y had the honor of being the recipient of the New Initiatives Grant from the YMCA of Greater St. Louis. The $5,000 grant is being used to support the great work of our PALs (Promoting Active Lifestyles) and Project Good Days programs.

Program in Focus: Natural Ties

The Campus Y offers many unique programs, reaching out to different interests of students, faculty, and the community. One that stands out is Natural Ties, a program dedicated to bringing Washington University students closer to the St. Louis community’s mentally disabled. Weekly dinners at the South40’s Center Court and biweekly events foster the development of friendships and bonds between students and community members.

Washington University's Campus Y facility is used solely for the purpose of housing community-service programs led by students of the University. Unfortunately, we do not offer any classes at this location, but you can find another nearby YMCA location at the YMCA of Greater St.

1st Ever Community Service Forum!

On an unseasonable warm Friday afternoon, a variety of social action groups came together to discuss a truly exhilarating topic, community service at Washington University. The students, pumped up by candy and ideas for collaboration, shared ways to make programs more successful and develop a more-unified community service presence on campus. Many ideas were shared for individual programs including improving volunteer recruitment and retention as well as marketing. By the end of the afternoon, numbers were exhenged and plans were made aimed at improving community service efforts on campus.

FIELD DAY: From Elementary School to University

On Saturday, March 24th, elementary school kids stormed Washington University’s Athletic Complex. Why, you ask? For Field Day, one of the Campus Y’s new programs this school year. Field Day was designed to recognize elementary students who had performed exceptionally well this academic year, giving them a chance to have fun and be rewarded for their hard work.

Cadence with Care

Founded by Varun Varadarajan, a Junior at Wash U, this program gives volunteers the opportunity to display their musical talents while being able to brighten up the day of the patients at the Siteman Cancer Center. After 6 months and more than 7,000 volunteer and staff hours, the 30th YMCA Bookfair was a huge success at the new location at the Kennedy Recreation Center in Susan Park in South County. The new site with its air-conditioning, single level, and wider aisles received rave reviews from both customers and workers. A big thank you to all our board members and friends who volunteered their time to make this event possible.
