Currently certified in YMCA Lifeguard or Red Cross Lifeguard with CPRAED for the Professional Rescuer, Oxygen Administration and First Aid. Must crossover to YMCA Lifeguard or attain certifications within 30 days.
Essential Functions of the Job
- Is attentive and alert at all times while on duty.
- Responds to any situation promptly; uses appropriate emergency procedures; provides appropriate care.
- Promptly records and reports any incident on accident report form.
- Attends all scheduled in-services.
- Enforces pool rules at all times.
- Completes all paperwork on time, e.g. daily checklists.
- Takes responsibility to maintain all certifications.
- Follows YMCA of Greater St. Louis uniform policy, swimsuit, YMCA guard shirt, badge, whistle, (no iPods, headphones, cell phones, etc.)

- Interpret and enforce pool rules and policies to ensure safety of all participants and swimmers.
- Execute emergency procedures as needed.
- Promote the YMCA swimming programs.

Duties and Responsibilities
- Activities – Implement developmentally appropriate activities that focus on each child’s individual needs. Ensure activities, materials and toys are age appropriate.
- Physical Environment – A sufficient quantity of materials and equipment is provided for the number of children enrolled. Materials and toys are kept in good repair. Broken or missing equipment is reported to the Nursery Coordinator
- Staff and Child Interaction – Interact frequently with the children individually and in small groups. Staff seeks meaningful conversations with the children, acknowledging their work, talking about event of importance, etc. Staff listens to children more than they talk. Staff facilitates social interaction and involvement in activities. Activities are more children directed than staff directed. Staff treats children with respect and consideration, regardless of their sex, race, religion, family background, physical or mental stability. The staff will plan ahead to prevent problem situations from occurring. They anticipate where they need to be and what they need to do. Children are in the proximity of the staff at all times. Staff can quickly reach a child and/or situation to prevent harm to a child. Staff provides opportunity for independence and self-help skills in children, as they are ready.
- Behavior Management – Establish supportive relationships with children and implement developmentally appropriate techniques or behavior management and group management. Use both verbal and non-verbal communication with children to build trusting and stable relationships. Set and communicate limits for acceptable behavior.
- Parent Communication and Involvement – Strong communication skills are used on a daily basis to keep parents informed about child’s accomplishments or concerns. Parents are greeted daily and treated with respect and dignity.
- Shift Availability – PM and every Saturday as needed capability to sub. This requirement must be met to continue employment status.

Group Leader

Purpose of Position:
Under the general direction of the Program Director & Site Director, the incumbent is responsible for assisting with the overall program, supervision of children and day-to-day operation of the School Age Child Care program. He/she relates to the Program Director, Site Director, Staff Team, state licensing regulators and community resource agencies.
Qualification Requirements
Education: Minimum of a high school degree and less than 1 year working with children(must meet Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services criteria as a State Certified Director)
Experience:
- Must be at least 18 years of age
- Posses at least 1 year experience in child care
- Must have experience working with children
- Must have strong communication, organization and detail skills
- Must have the ability to relate to children, parents, branch staff members and volunteers
- Must pass CPR/First Aid Certification
- Must complete YMCA required trainings
- Must follow directions, have strong leadership skills, be self-motivated and posses knowledge of group work principals and processes
- Certification in Principles of YMCA Child Care, Working with Youth 5-12 and School Age Child Care Director (within required time frame)
